HD Upgrades for Melrose Community Access Include Broadcast Pix Granite 5000 System

Billerica, Massachusetts  – Over the past decade, Melrose Massachusetts Television, Inc. (MMTV), the community access station for the City of Melrose, Mass., has been aggressively upgrading its production equipment. In January, the station made the move to a native HD production workflow with new cameras and an upgraded control room built around a Broadcast Pix™ Granite™ 5000 integrated production switcher.

MMTV produces a variety of original programs, including After Hours, a talk show that is shared with other regional stations, and Sound Stage, which showcases local musicians. The station also covers parades and other local events, and supports the local city government and educational channels. MMTV-Broadcast Pix GraniteOriginal programs are available in HD on YouTube and presented locally in letterbox SD on Comcast and Verizon FiOS.

In 2010, the nonprofit community organization upgraded to an SDI workflow and a Broadcast Pix™ Slate™ 5000 integrated production switcher. While the station researched other switcher options for the HD upgrade, it chose to stick with the reliability and flexibility of Broadcast Pix. “We wanted to keep the same abilities that we had with the Slate,” said Chris DeThomas, MMTV engineer. “It is wonderful. The hardware is a professional surface and the PixPad is great.”

Access A/V of Concord, N.H., handled the integration for the HD upgrade project. The Granite 5000 was installed in January, along with an upgraded monitor wall, Behringer audio mixer, Blackmagic HyperDeck Studio disk recorder, Clear-Com digital intercom system, Lectrosonics wireless IFB and JVC ProHD cameras. The Slate 5000 was then deployed to a local middle school for student productions.

DeThomas is very pleased with the HD upgrade. “It is everything that we have always wanted in our control room,” he said. “We have a completely professional space.”

Primarily driven by volunteers, MMTV programming is produced by people with varying degrees of production experience. MMTV uses Granite’s built-in Fluent-View customizable multi-view to accommodate both volunteers who prefer a more simplified setup and production veterans who want more information on screen.

“We customize it for different users,” DeThomas explained. “We have average folks producing for the first time, plus pros who bring that professional touch to the station. Everyone feels comfortable coming in – it makes the room not as intimidating.”

MMTV has also customized its Granite to manage productions in both of its studios. The four-camera Studio A is the default, but the control panel can quickly change to a new layout for three-camera Studio B productions. “We’re able to control two studios with one switcher and do it well,” DeThomas said. “That’s a great feature.”

Sarasota Upgrades to HD Production for City Commission Coverage with Broadcast Pix

Billerica, Massachusetts – Broadcast Pix™ today announced the city of Sarasota, Fla., has upgraded its City Hall facilities to a native HD infrastructure, anchored by a Granite™ 2000 integrated production switcher, to produce its city commission meetings for television and the Web.

In 2000, the city upgraded its small production facility in City Hall with an S-Video infrastructure. More than a dozen years later, however, the city found it difficult to maintain or replace its outdated equipment. In February, Encore Broadcast Solutions of Tampa, Fla., installed a system-wide upgrade, including an HD-SDI signal path.

“Part of our impetus for doing the upgrade was to upgrade to HD production and adopt a digital workflow,” said Miles Larsen, public broadcasting manager, city of Sarasota.

Coverage of city commission meetings is sent via fiber to master control in a nearby county building for Access Sarasota, a unique government access channel available locally on Comcast Cable and Verizon FiOS that is shared between Sarasota County and the city. Neither Comcast nor Verizon provides an HD channel, so Access Sarasota sends a 4:3 letterbox signal of its meeting coverage to maintain the wide aspect ratio. The city also provides live and on-demand HD meeting coverage on its Web site.

The upgraded system includes three new Panasonic PTZ HD cameras (as well as a previously purchased document camera) in the commission chambers. One camera provides a wide shot of the commission, another shoots close-ups of commission members, and a third is positioned to shoot presenters. The chamber upgrade also included new microphones and an electronic voting system.

In the control room, the Granite system replaced an aging Echolab switcher and PC-based graphics system. “We were not planning on doing a lot of crazy, elaborate stuff,” Larsen recalled. “This is a dedicated switcher just for covering meetings. We actually went back to Encore and asked if the Granite was more than what we needed, and they said we’d want room to grow. They were right.”

With 11 SDI inputs, Granite provides the city commission with enough inputs for all four cameras, as well as DVDs, USB thumb drives and tablets supplied by residents, when necessary. Plus, Encore and Broadcast Pix engineers were able to create an API to allow our switcher to integrate with the AMX control system in the commission chambers, so a staff member can run the production, if necessary.

Granite’s built-in production tools, including the customizable Fluent-View multi-view, have also improved workflow during meetings. In particular, the Inscriber CG is a “huge upgrade” from the previous graphics system, which Larsen said was poorly integrated and poorly positioned in the control room. “Having the CG inside the switcher is so nice,” he added. “There’s no rolling your chair back and forth between workstations, and it’s so much easier to make changes.”

The new system has only been in use since March, but Larsen is already planning to use Granite’s built-in clip store to add roll-ins to open and close meeting coverage. “We can do things we just couldn’t do before, and we have the freedom to think creatively and improve our production values,” he said. “Every time I sit down in front of the Granite, from the beginning of the meeting to the end of the meeting, I’m more convinced it was the right decision. It makes our productions easier and better.”

Broadcast Pix has introduced ReVue, a new HD slow motion replay system that work with any Broadcast Pix integrated production systems or independently in other production environments. Developed in collaboration with strategic partner EditShare, ReVue will be available in March and demonstrated at the 2014 NAB Show (Booth SL6325).

Available in two and four-channel configurations, ReVue features SDI connectivity and up to eight tracks of embedded audio, with optional 1080p recording and playback. The system is housed in a 2 RU chassis and includes 8 TB of RAID 6 storage, which can be expanded up to 16 TB.

ReVue’s compact controller includes a jog/shuttle wheel for reviewing footage, with dedicated buttons for marking in and out points for playback. All video sources are played back in sync, so it is easy to cut between cameras and find the best replay angle. Playback speed is controlled manually with the fader bar, but three preset buttons allow users to assign specific speeds for more consistent slo-mo results.

Game Creek Video Trusts PESA for Routing Needs at Super Bowl XLVIII

logoHuntsville, Alabama – PESA, a leading U.S.-based designer and manufacturer of professional audio and video connectivity, today announced Game Creek Video, an HD mobile production company based in Hudson, N.H., will use PESA video and audio routers for FOX’s coverage of Super Bowl XLVIII at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Sunday, Feb. 2.

Jason Taubman, Game Creek vice president of design and new technologies, said 75 percent of the company’s fleet is in the New York area to cover the Super Bowl for various clients. The entire truck compound at the game will be connected through PESA video and distributed audio routing systems, he said.

FX, the five-truck production system, which includes five 53-foot expando trucks, Game Creek PESA DRS JPEGis in place at the stadium for the FOX game broadcast. It includes a PESA Cheetah 512×1024 digital video router with embedding/de-embedding, along with a DRS 2048×2048 distributed audio router that supports analog, AES and MADI.

Liberty, on location at MetLife for FOX pre-game programming, includes a 53-foot production unit and a 53-foot graphics and support unit. The main truck features a Cheetah 384×720 digital video router, as well as a DRS 1536×1536 distributed audio router with analog, AES, and MADI I/O. “The whole world has not gone digital,” Taubman explained. “We need a variety of connection methods.”

Northstar, another 53-foot expando, was used on Jan. 28 for Super Bowl Media Day coverage at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J., then moved to MetLife for FOX Sports 1 coverage. The truck includes a Cheetah 288×576 digital video router, plus a DRS 704×576 distributed audio router with analog and AES I/O.

The game will be produced in 720p HD, with 55 cameras and 24 six-channel EVS replay systems, plus frame sync sources, 4K composites, graphics, and a “host of new toys” that FOX will reveal during the broadcast, Taubman said. “It’s a pretty straightforward crosspoint matrix,” he noted, “we just have a huge capacity needed.”

Columbus Consolidated Government TV Builds New Control Room around Broadcast Pix

Billerica, Massachusetts – When Georgia’s Columbus Consolidated Government opened its new City Service Center in June, it helped address parking issues for citizens and more than doubled the capacity of the council chambers. For Columbus Consolidated Government TV, its local government channel, relocation to the new building meant a chance to upgrade equipment that had not changed in more than a decade. The new control room is anchored by a Broadcast Pix™ Granite™ 2000 integrated production system.

Located on the second floor, the control room is positioned between the council chambers and CCG-TV studio, with large observation windows in both Columbus Granite 2000 JPGconnecting walls. With three wired drops in different areas of the City Service Center, as well as one at a new aquatic center across the street, the station can connect a camera, have it feed into the Granite, and go live with a press conference very quickly.

CCG-TV had been using an aging NewTek system, but Michael King, CCG-TV station manager, was ready for a change. “When I had the opportunity to upgrade, I immediately knew I was going to get a Broadcast Pix switcher,” he said. “We were behind the times, so we decided to update what we had. Broadcast Pix is the main catalyst behind everything that’s going on.”

The new studio includes two talk show sets, which are used for a variety of programs. CCG-TV produces about 14 shows a month, in addition to coverage of four weekly council meetings, committee meetings, press conferences, educational videos, and community event coverage. King has one part-time and one full-time employee, but sometimes borrows staff members from other departments to help produce programming. The station has multiple field cameras, two dedicated studio cameras, and two edit suites, plus an additional edit station in the control room.

To avoid bandwidth issues, CCG-TV has its own wireless network, and can use iPixPanel, Broadcast Pix’s iPad-based virtual control panel, to switch a show from anywhere in the building. “That is another good feature that we have with the Broadcast Pix,” King added.

During meetings, four new Panasonic HD PTZ cameras provide coverage of 10 council members, as well as other city officials and the public. King said the Granite is used to control all the cameras during a meeting, and camera presets are used frequently to simplify production.

CCG-TV uses many of Granite’s built-in workflow tools, including Inscriber CG and Fluent-View, its customizable multi-view. With Fluent Watch-Folders, each show has its own folder for clips, graphics, and other interstitials. “You don’t have to shuffle through a lot of stuff you don’t need,” King explained. “We do nine different programs. It keeps everything simple.”

Spectrum Productions Uses New Broadcast Pix Granite X Integrated Production System for SEC Football Events

Billerica, Massachusetts  – Broadcast Pix™ today announced Spectrum Productions, an AV production and rental services company, used its new Granite™ X integrated production system to produce video presentations for the Regions Bank SEC Coaches Luncheon and SEC Legends Dinner on Dec. 6 in Atlanta. The event staging included two 11×20-foot side video screens for video playback and image magnification (I-MAG), as well as an ultra-wide 52×16-foot,????????????????????????????????????????????? two-projector blend center display positioned behind the stage, all populated exclusively through the Broadcast Pix system.

The luncheon included a preview of the next day’s SEC Championship Game between the Auburn Tigers and Missouri Tigers, including insights from the head coaches of both programs, while the dinner honored 14 former players that were named the SEC 2013 Football Legends Class in September. Both events were held in the same hotel ballroom and featured a three-camera setup. According to Preston MacIntyre, president, Spectrum Productions, all video clips and graphics were accessed from the Granite’s built-in clip server.

Fluent Macros, Granite’s built-in file-based macros system, was used extensively for both programs. Spectrum created a series of complex transitions, which involved layers of motion loops, picture-in-picture compositions, keys, and more. “It really would be impossible to execute so many simultaneous cues without the Broadcast Pix Fluent Macros. That’s a lot of different commands for people to be running manually,” MacIntyre explained. “We wanted the consistency and repeatability of the macros. No matter how many steps, we knew everything was going to be perfect.”

To create content for the main (and unusually sized) screen, graphic images were produced in Adobe After Effects as 3840×1080 images. A reverse anamorphic process compressed the images down to 1920×1080 resolution, which created “squished” images when played back through the Granite. The output from the Granite was fed into a Vista Systems Spyder x20 video processor, which re-created the original aspect ratio and flawlessly fed the blended image into two projectors.

SEC Legends Granite X JPEGSince Spectrum received its Granite X system in November, it has been used for both SEC events, the NASCAR 2013 Nationwide / Camping World Truck Series Awards Banquet in Miami Beach, Fla., and the Coalition to Salute American Heroes 2013 Road to Recovery Conference in Orlando, Fla. Spectrum upgraded from its Granite 5000 system to the Granite X for its advanced multi-view capabilities, which offers 16 full motion source windows and makes it easier to work with robotic cameras. MacIntyre also praised Broadcast Pix’s constant, one-frame latency, which is important for live event production. “Some competing products have quite a bit of a challenge with video delay,” he added.
