Broadcast Pix Part of New Video Call Center Solution for New Genre of Production Workflow

Billerica, Massachusetts –  Broadcast Pix™ announced today that its integrated production switchers are being used with the new Video Call Center (VCC) automated production solution to bring the caller-based talk radio show format to television. By utilizing Broadcast Pix’s application programming interface (API) and file-based macros, the VCC system essentially creates a video-driven version of talk radio using Web-based video sources.

Inventor Tom Wolzien company received a patent for VCC on July 1. A 45-year television veteran, Wolzien serves as a consultant for large media organizations through his company, Wolzien LCC, and is the lead independent director for VCC Broadcast Pix Switcher UseTiVo, Inc. Since last year, Wolzien and his team have been testing the VCC system by producing TalkCenterAmerica®, a series of call-in shows covering a variety of topics.

“VCC is right at the intersection of social and mass media, TV and the Web,” said Wolzien. “What’s unique is that the system doesn’t just handle a single IP video call, but it’s designed to handle multiple video calls simultaneously, each with the power of its own computer – essential for any live caller-based TV program.”

With VCC, the on-camera host produces the call-in show without a traditional control room. Broadcast Pix API and Fluent™ Macros allow the VCC software to provide the host with a great deal of production flexibility, such as triggering sequences of individual key/shot combinations that can be modified based on available callers. As a result, with no content costs for callers and minimal staffing requirements, VCC is a cost effective approach to producing live programming.

Using Skype and similar technologies on various devices, multiple Web video callers can connect to the show. Viewers can see the callers and whatever the callers want to show. Proprietary CAT™ Caller Acquisition Software assists screeners with incoming calls, audio metering, video cropping and conversion, and return video. Plus, a patented Text Overlay superimposes caller names and locations over the caller’s picture at the screener’s position and remains on-screen when the caller is added to the live production.

HD Upgrades for Melrose Community Access Include Broadcast Pix Granite 5000 System

Billerica, Massachusetts  – Over the past decade, Melrose Massachusetts Television, Inc. (MMTV), the community access station for the City of Melrose, Mass., has been aggressively upgrading its production equipment. In January, the station made the move to a native HD production workflow with new cameras and an upgraded control room built around a Broadcast Pix™ Granite™ 5000 integrated production switcher.

MMTV produces a variety of original programs, including After Hours, a talk show that is shared with other regional stations, and Sound Stage, which showcases local musicians. The station also covers parades and other local events, and supports the local city government and educational channels. MMTV-Broadcast Pix GraniteOriginal programs are available in HD on YouTube and presented locally in letterbox SD on Comcast and Verizon FiOS.

In 2010, the nonprofit community organization upgraded to an SDI workflow and a Broadcast Pix™ Slate™ 5000 integrated production switcher. While the station researched other switcher options for the HD upgrade, it chose to stick with the reliability and flexibility of Broadcast Pix. “We wanted to keep the same abilities that we had with the Slate,” said Chris DeThomas, MMTV engineer. “It is wonderful. The hardware is a professional surface and the PixPad is great.”

Access A/V of Concord, N.H., handled the integration for the HD upgrade project. The Granite 5000 was installed in January, along with an upgraded monitor wall, Behringer audio mixer, Blackmagic HyperDeck Studio disk recorder, Clear-Com digital intercom system, Lectrosonics wireless IFB and JVC ProHD cameras. The Slate 5000 was then deployed to a local middle school for student productions.

DeThomas is very pleased with the HD upgrade. “It is everything that we have always wanted in our control room,” he said. “We have a completely professional space.”

Primarily driven by volunteers, MMTV programming is produced by people with varying degrees of production experience. MMTV uses Granite’s built-in Fluent-View customizable multi-view to accommodate both volunteers who prefer a more simplified setup and production veterans who want more information on screen.

“We customize it for different users,” DeThomas explained. “We have average folks producing for the first time, plus pros who bring that professional touch to the station. Everyone feels comfortable coming in – it makes the room not as intimidating.”

MMTV has also customized its Granite to manage productions in both of its studios. The four-camera Studio A is the default, but the control panel can quickly change to a new layout for three-camera Studio B productions. “We’re able to control two studios with one switcher and do it well,” DeThomas said. “That’s a great feature.”

Broadcast Pix Highlights New Products at InfoComm 2014

Billerica, Massachusetts – Broadcast Pix™ will showcase new products and updated software tools at InfoComm 2014 (C5737), which runs June 18-20 in Las Vegas, Nev. Among its new offerings is its ClearKey next generation chromakey upgrade for its integrated production switchers, expanded family of Flint™ systems, and new standalone fX3D real-time 3D graphics system and ReVue HD slow motion replay system.

Part of the new Version 4.0 software for Granite™ and Mica™ systems, as well as Version 3.0 software for Flint, ClearKey features precise, highly adjustable keying that can handle challenging visuals and create more realistic shadow and lighting effects. Its robust color correction removes the most stubborn spill from chromakeyed objects, while a key crop function can confine the keying effect to certain areas of the screen. Chromakey color is selected with a simple eye dropper tool, and intuitive controls make it easy to adjust lighting, shadow and spill correction effects.

Both fX3D and ReVue work independently in existing production environments or can be tightly integrated with Broadcast Pix systems. fX3D features a simplified end-to-end graphics workflow that makes it easy to create and playout high-end graphics. Its three software modules provide an intuitive interface to create graphic content, complete with a built-in 3D modeler and template-based rundown controller. Developed in collaboration with strategic partner EditShare, ReVue plays back two or four channels of video in sync, so it is easy to cut between cameras and find the best replay angle. Its compact controller includes a jog/shuttle wheel for reviewing footage, intuitive controls for manual and preset playback speeds, and dedicated buttons for marking in and out points for playback.

Broadcast Pix has also expanded its family of Flint systems. All three HD models include the same workflow software tools, but provide different input configurations to address different production requirements and budgets. The entry-level system, Flint LE, supports three HDMI or analog (composite, component or S-Video) inputs. Flint LX features four SDI or HDMI input, while Flint LS supports six inputs and offers a choice of six SDI (two of which can be HDMI) or four SDI and two HDMI or analog inputs. All models include two additional network inputs, which are ideal for presentations and Web pages from remote computers.

Flint handles the entire production workflow, from ingest to distribution. It includes a multi-format production mixer that allows operators to include cloud-based content from Skype, Twitter and other resources during live productions. Flint ingests and scales all sources while maintaining constant lip sync. Other built-in tools include an internal Inscriber CG, two-channel clip server, audio mixer with on-screen stereo faders and VU meters, customizable multi-view and HD streaming in a variety of formats.

Also announced for the show is VOX™ Lite, a small-scale version of its popular VOX voice-automated production option. Sarasota Upgrades to HD Production for City Commission Coverage with Broadcast Pix

Billerica, Massachusetts – Broadcast Pix™ today announced the city of Sarasota, Fla., has upgraded its City Hall facilities to a native HD infrastructure, anchored by a Granite™ 2000 integrated production switcher, to produce its city commission meetings for television and the Web.

In 2000, the city upgraded its small production facility in City Hall with an S-Video infrastructure. More than a dozen years later, however, the city found it difficult to maintain or replace its outdated equipment. In February, Encore Broadcast Solutions of Tampa, Fla., installed a system-wide upgrade, including an HD-SDI signal path.

“Part of our impetus for doing the upgrade was to upgrade to HD production and adopt a digital workflow,” said Miles Larsen, public broadcasting manager, city of Sarasota.

Coverage of city commission meetings is sent via fiber to master control in a nearby county building for Access Sarasota, a unique government access channel available locally on Comcast Cable and Verizon FiOS that is shared between Sarasota County and the city. Neither Comcast nor Verizon provides an HD channel, so Access Sarasota sends a 4:3 letterbox signal of its meeting coverage to maintain the wide aspect ratio. The city also provides live and on-demand HD meeting coverage on its Web site.

The upgraded system includes three new Panasonic PTZ HD cameras (as well as a previously purchased document camera) in the commission chambers. One camera provides a wide shot of the commission, another shoots close-ups of commission members, and a third is positioned to shoot presenters. The chamber upgrade also included new microphones and an electronic voting system.

In the control room, the Granite system replaced an aging Echolab switcher and PC-based graphics system. “We were not planning on doing a lot of crazy, elaborate stuff,” Larsen recalled. “This is a dedicated switcher just for covering meetings. We actually went back to Encore and asked if the Granite was more than what we needed, and they said we’d want room to grow. They were right.”

With 11 SDI inputs, Granite provides the city commission with enough inputs for all four cameras, as well as DVDs, USB thumb drives and tablets supplied by residents, when necessary. Plus, Encore and Broadcast Pix engineers were able to create an API to allow our switcher to integrate with the AMX control system in the commission chambers, so a staff member can run the production, if necessary.

Granite’s built-in production tools, including the customizable Fluent-View multi-view, have also improved workflow during meetings. In particular, the Inscriber CG is a “huge upgrade” from the previous graphics system, which Larsen said was poorly integrated and poorly positioned in the control room. “Having the CG inside the switcher is so nice,” he added. “There’s no rolling your chair back and forth between workstations, and it’s so much easier to make changes.”

The new system has only been in use since March, but Larsen is already planning to use Granite’s built-in clip store to add roll-ins to open and close meeting coverage. “We can do things we just couldn’t do before, and we have the freedom to think creatively and improve our production values,” he said. “Every time I sit down in front of the Granite, from the beginning of the meeting to the end of the meeting, I’m more convinced it was the right decision. It makes our productions easier and better.”

Broadcast Pix Anchors New HD Production System for Tampa Bay Rowdies TV Broadcasts

Billerica, Massachusetts – Before the start of the 2014 season, the Tampa Bay Rowdies negotiated broadcast rights for all 13 of its Saturday night home soccer matches. As a result, it was time for the team to upgrade its SD production facilities at Al Lang Stadium in St. Petersburg, Fla. The new HD production includes a four-camera setup, custom animated graphics and a Broadcast Pix™ Granite™ 1000 integrated production switcher.

Hi-Tech Enterprises in Clearwater, Fla., was the integrator for the project. SONY DSCAccording to Ed Griswold, Hi-Tech engineer, the new control room was built in about three weeks, and the system was operational in time for the first Rowdies home game on April 12.

Since the Rowdies began calling Al Lang Stadium home in 2010, VideoArt Productions of Palm Harbor, Fla., has been providing live coverage of their matches. Established in 1982, VideoArt has produced thousands of hours of live programming, and worked with a number of Florida-based professional sports teams and content providers.

The first three seasons were produced exclusively for a Web audience, but this season’s Rowdies contests are also broadcast on WTTA, the MyNetworkTV affiliate in the Tampa/St. Petersburg market (DMA #14). All matches are also streamed to the North American Soccer League’s live streaming site, NASLlive.com, and some are streamed to ESPN3’s Web site.

Art Dryce, president of VideoArt, handled directing, TD, graphics, and commercial and replay roll-ins for the first three seasons. With the move to HD production and the added complexities for broadcast television, however, he did not want the new setup to be another one-man control room. Instead, he wanted a system that could support separate positions for a TD and graphics operator.

The upgraded control room is located in a dedicated area of the stadium’s press box. The typical Rowdies production features two high midfield cameras – one is the main game camera and the second handles tight action follow shots – as well as a sideline camera and end zone camera. The cameras are connected via fiber, which allows for an extremely high quality video signal to the Broadcast Pix system, Dryce said. Productions also include animated graphics, which are stored in the Granite’s built-in clip server, and instant replay. Video Art provides all crew members during production.

The new Granite system replaced a Stream Breeze Pro, which is now tasked with encoding the broadcast (and changing some ad content) for the Web. Griswold said the Broadcast Pix created a “more traditional workflow” for the on-air broadcasts.

Dryce still produces and directs, but Tom Sipos, vice president of VideoArt, handles TD duties for Rowdies broadcasts. A graphics operator shares the system with Sipos, but each work station has its own monitor, populated by Granite’s built-in Fluent-View customizable multi-view. Griswold is also on site to monitor the broadcast signal and provide engineering support.

The graphics operator uses Fluent Rapid CG is used to update the on-screen clock and scoreboard during matches. Ideal for sports coverage, the Fluent Rapid CG™ option for Broadcast Pix systems streamlines the creation of data-intensive CG graphics. By automatically integrating databases, RSS feeds, cloud-based content and custom actions like scorekeeping into templates, Fluent Rapid CG produces customized graphics with significantly less manual effort.

“The system was easy to learn to use, and is easy to operate during our show,” Dryce said. “It has met the expectations we had for our production flow, capability and quality, and with every game we continue to learn new things. It is a powerful production tool. We’re very impressed.”

Broadcast Pix Introduces VOX Lite Voice-Automated Control for Smaller Productions

Billerica, Massachusetts  – Broadcast Pix™ today announced VOX™ Lite, a small-scale version of its popular VOX voice-automated production option that works with any Flint™, Granite™ or Mica™ integrated production switcher. It will be demonstrated at InfoComm 2014 (C5737), which runs June 18-20 in Las Vegas, Nev.

Since it was introduced in 2011, VOX has become a popular automated solution for visual radio, as well as government and corporate meetings for television,VOX Lite Diagram JPEG Internet, and in-house projection. VOX and VOX Lite eliminate the need for an operator for live productions, as sophisticated software detects which microphone is in use and switches cameras for automatic video-follow-audio productions.

Using the power of Broadcast Pix’s built-in Fluent™ Macros, VOX Lite can also add or remove graphics, roll clips and animations, execute complex PiP compositions, and incorporate information from external data sources like Twitter to create an appealing visual experience. Multiple macros can be assigned to each microphone – and selection criteria can be established – to create varied shot selection and graphics. Conditions can be set to prevent coughs or one-word comments from triggering camera changes. Other features include manual override and the ability to prioritize microphones.

Billerica, Massachusetts – Broadcast Pix™ recently announced a special Slate™ trade-in program that offers incentives for customers to upgrade to native HD Mica™ or Granite™ integrated production switchers. The program ends June 30.

Customers who trade in any Slate will save $2,500 off the purchase of a new Mica integrated production switcher, plus receive a free camera option and an Mica 2014 JPEG Trade In 4 3 14additional year of warranty.
