U.S. Bank Arena Upgrades Hockey Coverage to HD with Broadcast Pix Granite X Integrated Production System

Billerica, Massachusetts – When Jim Plummer, technical director for the U.S. Bank Arena in Cincinnati, was shopping for a new production switcher at the 2013 NAB Show, he kept coming back to Broadcast Pix™ integrated production switchers. His choice became even easier when he won a Flint™ system during the show, which the arena upgraded to a Granite™ X.

Home to the ECHL Cincinnati Cyclones, U.S. Bank Arena was built in 1975 had a major renovation in 1997, which included the installation of a Sony analog US Bank Arena Granite X JPEGswitcher with external DVE. As part of a 2013 upgrade to HD production, which also included new cameras and monitors, the new Granite was installed early last fall in time for the current hockey season.

According to Plummer, the downtown arena seats about 17,000 spectators and hosts more than 100 events per year, including concerts, NBA preseason games, and 36 Cyclones home games. The in-house, three-camera video production is primarily used for hockey coverage, as well as some preseason basketball games and some comedy concerts. A four-screen, center hung video board provides the most prominent view for fans during the game, but there are multiple small monitors throughout the concourse, suites, and on-site restaurant.

During each home hockey game, the director switches while a second operator coordinates graphics and roll-ins. “It works out very well for us,” Plummer explained. “With hockey, you don’t know when you’re getting a stop, so you have to set your cues and be ready to go.”

The control room team also houses light and audio operators, plus one person coordinating game operations and promotions.

U.S. Bank Arena uses several of the Granite’s 12 SDI outputs during productions. One delivers a feed of the high center camera to the coach’s office, where it is recorded for review. Another feed is recorded to DVD for league officials and the visiting team. Plus, the live game production is provided to America ONE Sports, an online provider of live and on-demand sports. “Those multiple outputs really help us out a lot,” Plummer said.

Most of the Granite’s built-in Fluent™ workflow tools have already been incorporated into productions. Granite’s clip, animation, and still stores have made it easy for Plummer and his team to incorporate graphics and sound effects for “Star Wars Night” and other themed events during the season. Plus, Fluent-View, the customizable multi-view, quickly became a favorite feature among the directors, who have created different layouts for hockey, basketball, and concerts.

The optional Fluent Rapid CG feeds score and game clock data directly from the Daktronics scoreboard into graphics produced with the integrated Harris Inscriber CG. Fluent Rapid CG also manages data from an XML feed, so lower-third graphics can include real-time player statistics. “It makes things so much easier,” Plummer added.

Fluent Macros, Granite’s file-based macros system, is being used to create complex transitions and effects. Some transitions, for example, now feature the Cyclones logo, an effect that could not be produced using the previous equipment. Plummer is also planning to incorporate cloud-based content such as Twitter feeds and Instagram pictures into live productions. “It’s something we couldn’t do before,” he said.

With more than half the hockey season complete, people are noticing the improved production values, and Plummer is very pleased with the new Broadcast Pix system. “We love it,” he said. “It does everything we want it to do. The more games we do, the more comfortable we’re getting and incorporating more into the production.”

ABS to Design, Integrate HD Upgrade of Television Production Facilities at San Jose State University

SEATAC, WA — Professional video and audio systems integration firm Advanced Broadcast Solutions (ABS) today announced it has been contracted to provide a comprehensive HD upgrade of the video production facilities for the School of Journalism and Mass Communications (JMC) at San Jose State University in San Jose, Calif. ABS will design, procure, and install the systemABS Dwight Bentel Hall JPEG, which should be completed in April.

Since ABS won the bid process, Bob Rucker, director of the JMC School, has been impressed by the company’s expertise in classroom technology designed specifically for journalism education. “They understood what we were trying to do from day one,” he said. “ABS has done a fantastic job staying on budget, being creative with innovations in the technology and enabling new ideas throughout the process.”

Budgeted at more than $600,000, the project will include an overhaul of the television studio, control room and a separate newsroom “flashcam” location in the new converged newsroom in Dwight Bentel Hall. The upgrade is funded by the Jack and Emma Anderson Fund, an $8.7 million endowment from the couple who owned the print shop that published the school’s Spartan Daily newspaper for more than 40 years, and administered by the university’s Tower Foundation.

A 24-input Ross Video Carbonite 1-A M/E production switcher with built-in multi-view will anchor the control room. Other components will include a Yamaha LS9-32 digital audio console, Clear-Com intercom system and Panasonic 55-inch LED monitors. The new Ross XPression Studio CG will be configured to connect with the school’s convergence newsroom computer system for automatic loading of graphics through a MOS gateway.

Four new HD cameras will be housed in the updated studio, three Sony HXC-D70K cameras coupled with Autocue 17-inch prompters on Libec pedestals, plus one Sony BRC-Z330 PTZ camera mounted to the lighting grid for overhead shots. ABS will also install custom curtains, a Pro Cyc 3B-EZ System and a new lighting package.

Inside the newly renovated newsroom, where award-winning newspaper, television,  magazine and advertising students work together,  the “Breaking News Desk” will be used to produce live standups and other segments for Web-based news reports and Update News, the school’s television newscast. The area will feature a wall-mounted Sony PTZ camera that can be operated from the control room or locally via handheld remote.

“Educational institutions don’t often get a chance to upgrade their production facilities, especially not on a scale like this project for San Jose State,” said Mark Siegel, president of ABS. “We’ve designed an HD workflow that mirrors the file-based operations found in broadcast news environments across the country to prepare students for the real world. The new system will be a viable teaching environment for years to come, and it’s been specifically engineered for future expansion.”

While Rucker acknowledged the school’s last major video technology upgrade was in the mid-1990s, new equipment and a new strategic plan will help raise the school’s international profile. “We’ve got some very big plans for this new studio,” he said. “Our goal is to create a center for social media research in Silicon Valley. We’re going to create a global learning opportunity for our school that will excite and enable our diverse student body to test their creative new media ideas and technology approaches alongside the world class experts of Silicon Valley.”

South Carolina Installs Two Broadcast Pix Mica Systems for HD Video Coverage of State House

Billerica, Massachusetts  – While South Carolina Educational Television (SCETV) produces a variety of original television programming and provides video production services for other state agencies, one of its primary responsibilities is coverage of the state’s House of Representatives and Senate proceedings. When the operation was upgraded to HD production in late 2013, SCETV installed two Broadcast Pix™ Mica™ integrated production switchers to handle switching, graphics, and more.

SCETV is a statewide network of PBS member stations based in Columbia.IM000767.JPG Established in the 1950s for distance learning, it has 11 call letter stations across the state, as well as eight radio stations. State House coverage is broadcast on ETV World, one of the network’s multicast channels, and streamed live to www.scstatehouse.gov.

According to Ben Wilson, SCETV project manager of engineering, the move to HD for coverage of the House and Senate was prompted by the clerks of the House and Senate, who wanted to improve the quality of the video. “It was time to replace the cameras,” Wilson added. “Almost none of the equipment had ongoing support from the manufacturers because it was so old.”

The control room is housed in a small room next to the visitor’s entrance to the South Carolina State House, with the two chambers located on opposite ends of the building. In 2009, SCETV purchased Broadcast Pix Slate™ integrated production systems to replace analog Grass Valley production switchers and Chyron Maxine CGs, which had been in use since the control room was built in 1998. When the decision was made to update operations to native HD, Wilson chose to upgrade from Slate to Mica systems. (The Slate systems are now used to downconvert the HD feeds to SD for distribution on ETV World, which is an SD channel.)

Video production for each chamber is handled by one operator, who switches and positions the cameras, monitors audio, and inserts name keys and full-screen graphics using Mica’s built-in Inscriber CG. An ETV bug is inserted in the upper right-hand corner of each feed using the built-in still store. Both the House and Senate are in session simultaneously much of the time, so the TDs sit side-by-side in the control room wearing headphones. SCETV relies on two primary TDs, but has several operators who are called in when sessions run long.

In an effort to save counter space for other equipment, Wilson opted to install touchscreens instead of traditional control panels. Each operator has two 23-inch touchscreens, one populated with a PixPad and SoftPanel to easily call up graphics, while the second acts as a monitor wall, displaying preview, program, and sources.

When the legislative sessions ended last July, Wilson and his team began the HD upgrade, which included installation of both Broadcast Pix systems, an upgraded Utah Scientific hybrid router, new Panasonic PTZ cameras in both chambers, and a complete rebuild of the distribution infrastructure. HD LCD monitors in the Main Lobby and Joint Legislative Conference Room (Library) were also installed and are fed through the Mica systems. “The legislative session started the second week of January, so we had to have them operational by then,” Wilson recalled.

Each chamber originally had three cameras, but a fourth was added during the upgrade. The Senate now has one camera in the rear of the chamber, two on the sides, and a fourth behind the rostrum for gallery coverage. The House has two rear cameras, one of which provides coverage of the voting boards on the wall, and two side cameras at the front of the chamber to shoot the gallery.

With several weeks of productions complete, the TDs like the new Broadcast Pix systems, and reactions to the upgraded productions have been positive. “I think it’s great, and we’ve been getting a lot of compliments,” Wilson said.

Broadcast Pix Unveils ReVue

The following article was published on Content + Technology on February 28th. The article can be viewed here.

Broadcast Pix has introduced ReVue, a new HD slow motion replay system that work with any Broadcast Pix integrated production systems or independently in other production environments. Developed in collaboration with strategic partner EditShare, ReVue will be available in March and demonstrated at the 2014 NAB Show (Booth SL6325).

Available in two and four-channel configurations, ReVue features SDI connectivity and up to eight tracks of embedded audio, with optional 1080p recording and playback. The system is housed in a 2 RU chassis and includes 8 TB of RAID 6 storage, which can be expanded up to 16 TB.

ReVue’s compact controller includes a jog/shuttle wheel for reviewing footage, with dedicated buttons for marking in and out points for playback. All video sources are played back in sync, so it is easy to cut between cameras and find the best replay angle. Playback speed is controlled manually with the fader bar, but three preset buttons allow users to assign specific speeds for more consistent slo-mo results.

“Broadcast Pix has built our reputation on reliable and affordable integrated production systems,” explained Steve Ellis, Broadcast Pix CEO. “When we decided to introduce a slo-mo replay system, our objective was to deliver a very high quality product at a price that nearly everyone can afford. ReVue provides a powerful, multi-source HD replay system that fits the budgets of schools and community channels.”

ReVue’s two output channels can be configured as preview/program or as two programs. With its built-in multi-view, ReVue provides monitors for all active sources, plus preview and program windows. ReVue’s on-screen user interface makes it easy to keep track of marked clips and replays. Plus, Broadcast Pix integrated production systems can trigger ReVue playlists directly from the production switcher.

Our customers demand solutions that improve workflow, and we focused our efforts on controlling all aspects of the production environment,” Ellis added. “The next evolution of this workflow is to move content from live production to broadcast infrastructure and post. By integrating ReVue into their Broadcast Pix live production environment, our customers can expand their workflow through seamless integration into the server, editorial, and asset management systems offered by EditShare.”
