FUJIFILM’S 55X Zoom for Large Venue Shooting and Lightweight Cabrio Zoom Make NAB2014 Debut

Wayne, N.J. – Two lenses from the Optical Devices Division of FUJIFILM North America Corporation will make their NAB debut this year – the Premier PL 14-35mm Cabrio wide-angle lens and the XA55x9.5 HDTV Telephoto Box Style lens. Other NAB2014 innovations from the Optical Devices Division will be announced shortly. This year also marks FUJIFILM’s 80thanniversary, and 40 years for the Optical Devices Division, formerly known as FUJINON, in the U.S. The company will exhibit in NAB Booth #C7025.

The new XA55x9.5 telephoto zoom is designed for large venues that require tight shots from long distances, such as for sports, concerts and any live events. ThisXA55x9 5BESM-S5L 9 23 13 JPEG 1 zoom “fills a sweet spot in our line of 2/3” studio/field lenses,” according to Thom Calabro, director of Marketing and Product Development for the Optical Division of FUJIFILM. “With a focal length from 9.5 to 535mm [or 19.0 to 1050mm with a 2x extender], it captures tight shots from long distances even in the most challenging environments.”

Like the XA50x9.5 before it, this lens is available with a built-in lens support bracket for direct mounting to an ENG-style camera, which eliminates that cost. Also built-in is optical image stabilization, which helps the operator maintain stable close-up shots for long periods. A 16-bit encoder outputs zoom, focus position and other lens data – so it can easily combine CGI with live images.

“The new 14-35mm Cabrio was designed with the latest customer feedback, especially regarding focal length,” explained Calabro. “As with all of our Cabrio lenses, the 14-35mm lens is lightweight and comfortable to use with today’s smaller 4K cameras, but we’ve expanded the focal length range from NAB 2013 to 14-35mm at T2.9, with 200-degree focus rotation. For shooters looking for a lightweight zoom that can be used as a handheld and capture wide angles in tight spaces, it’s ideal.”

The PL 14-35mm Cabrio has a detachable digital servo drive and can be used as a self-contained ENG-style lens or a cine style lens. When used without the drive, industry-standard cine motors can be fitted.

Designed using the latest proprietary optical simulation software, the PL 14-Premier PL 14-35mm Cabrio wide-angle lens ZK2.5x14 (1280x823) JPEG35mm lens offers exceptional optical performance in the center of the image and in the corners of the frame. The digital servo’s 16-bit encoding assures operators that all lens data output—including the position of the zoom, iris, and focus—is extremely accurate. The PL 14-35mm lens supports Lens Data System (LDS) and /i metadata formats, and can be controlled using cinema industry standard wireless controllers and existing FUJINON wired and wireless units.

FUJINON’s PL 14-35mm lens is the latest development in the company’s popular Cabrio series, which includes the Premier PL 19-90mm and the PL 85-300mm lenses.

Both the PL 14-35mm wide-angle zoom and the XA55x are available now.

FOX Sports Relies on FUJINON Cabrios for Close Calls at Superbowl and NFL Season; To Capture Race Action at Upcoming Daytona 500

Wayne, N.J., February 20, 2014 – FOX Sports has adopted what the network considers a ‘best of breed’ 4K imaging system for its NFL regular season coverage and this month’s Super Bowl XLVII coverage – the Sony F55 CineAlta digital motion picture camera paired with a FUJINON PL 85-300mm Cabrio lens. The combination has been so successful, FOX Sports will use two of its F55/Cabrio pairings to capture close up shots during NASCAR’s Daytona 500 on February 23rd and coverage from Budweiser SpeedWeek events leading up to the big race, marking the first time the network will employ the duo for its auto ZK Cabrio Family of Lenses 9 5 13 JPGracing coverage.

Michael Davies, FOX Sports’ Vice President of Field and Technical Operations, looks forward to extending the network’s high-resolution imaging to auto racing. “We can use these cameras and lenses to zoom into an area with little or no resolution lost,” said Davies. “For auto racing, we’ll be able to shoot the pits and any accidents may that occur in great detail. We can capture the different things that can happen simultaneously in an incident – what caused it, who got caught up in it, and who got away – all in one shot. We can also take the viewer closer into the pits in a way that far surpasses what we’ve done before.”

During the Seattle Seahawks’ 43-8 Super Bowl win over the Denver Broncos on February 2nd, six Sony 4K cameras were lensed with FUJINON PL 85-300 and PL 19-90 Cabrio’s. They were used to capture close calls at the field’s sidelines, goal lines and end lines. During the regular NFL season, one Sony/FUJINON 4K combination was used though out the season to capture potential close calls.

This is the third year FOX Sports has employed 4K imaging for its NFL coverage with a Sony/FUJINON package. Davies believes this represents the best of today’s 4K imaging technology: “We used this camera/lens combination to great effect throughout the NFL season. It’s a highly compelling tool to show exactly what happened in vivid detail. We can zoom into a foot, a hand or even piles of players to determine if it was really a catch or a fumble. Was he in or out of bounds? I think this package will become ubiquitous for football coverage.”

The Cabrio zooms affords FOX Sports the greatest magnification and versatility possible using a 4K camera with a PL mount. “Previously, we had to use light-ZK3 5x85-2 85-300mm Cabrio 11 8 12 low ressucking adaptors with our lenses, but the Cabrio’s, with their native mounts, work beautifully with the F55’s, which is particularly evident in nighttime and low-light situations.”

“We’re honored to have been a part of FOX Sport’s 4K Super Bowl coverage this year,” said Thom Calabro, FUJIFILM Optical Devices’ Director of Marketing and Product Development.  “Having our lenses contribute to the success of such a significant sporting event for FOX Sports is a proud achievement for us all at FUJIFILM.”

The high-performance FUJINON Cabrio zoom lens were designed using the latest optical simulation technology, offering exceptional optical performance in both the center of the image and in the corners of the frame. The PL 85-300’s longer lens makes it ideal for professional cinematographers and videographers. The PL 85-300 offers a focal length of 85-220mm at T2.9 and 300mm at T4.0, the PL 19-90 is T2.9 end to end, both with 200-degree focus rotation.

The lightweight, versatile FUJINON Cabrio lenses feature an exclusive detachable servo drive unit, making them ideal for use as standard PL lens or as ENG-style lenses. The digital servo’s 16-bit encoding assures operators that all lens data output is extremely accurate. The lenses are equipped with flange focal distance adjustment, self-aligning servo drive, a macro function for extreme close-up focus, and coverage of a 31.5mm diagonal sensor. Cabrio’s can be controlled using cinema industry standard wireless controllers, as well as existing FUJINON wired and wireless units.
