KIRO-TV Travels to Panama Canal for ENG Shoot with Zylight F8 LED Fresnel

image002LOS ANGELES – When the multi-billion dollar expansion of the Panama Canal is complete in 2015, larger ships will be able to go through the waterway and potentially bypass Seattle and other West Coast ports. As part of a larger story about the expansion’s potential local economic impact that aired on Nov. 20, KIRO-TV, the Cox Media Group-owned CBS affiliate for Seattle-Tacoma (DMA #12), sent a news team to tour the Panama Canal and talk with shipping industry professionals from the region.

Terry Griffin, bureau chief photojournalist, left his heavier, more expensive HMI lights at the station and instead packed the Zylight F8 LED Fresnel. The KIRO-TV F8 CU Panama JPEG (3)lightweight F8 collapses to less than four inches thick for easy transport and storage, which was helpful during the international trip in early October.

“Traveling 4,000 miles hauling gear can be both cumbersome and expensive,” Griffin explained. “A nine-pound light in my suitcase versus a 20-pound light in an additional checked bag saved excess baggage to keep track of – or lose – plus weight and fees.”

According to Griffin, using the F8 avoided several problems on location, including a lack of power outlets that would have rendered his AC-only HMI lights useless. “There was zero AC power available to us on the massive canal construction zone for our interview,” he said. “Using my 90-watt Anton/Bauer camera battery to power the F8 at 100 percent gave me an hour and six minutes of beautiful 5600K light. Having to only take one battery type charger for both light and camera was a huge bonus.”

KIRO-TV Panama F8 JPEG (3)Griffin was “incredibly pleased” with the F8, particularly when dealing with the harsh lighting from the midday equatorial sun. “The F8 was the perfect fill light to the noonday sun key light at the equator,” he said. “Zero heat, zero cables – the F8 solved my lighting dilemma with added bonuses. It’s a great tool in the ENG/EFP kit for any TV photojournalist.”

Available in daylight (5600K) or tungsten (3200K), the F8 maintains single shadow traditional Fresnel beam shaping through an eight-inch SCHOTT glass lens, and offers a patented focusing system for spot and flood operations. With a CRI (color rendering index) of up to 97 or better, the fully dimmable F8 offers and adjustable beam spread (16-70 degrees) for even coverage for widescreen productions. Its LED engine with quantum dot technology draws only 95 watts, but has close to the light output of a traditional 1000-watt Fresnel.

Zylight LED Light Shines In ENG Panama Canal Shoot

The following article was published on TVNewsCheck today:

When KIRO Seattle traveled 4,000 miles for a story about the expansion of the Panama Canal and the potential economic impact on the Seattle area, chief photojournalist Terry Grifin knew he didn’t want to lug around a ton of gear.

So, instead of HMI lights that traditionally weigh upwards to 20 lbs., Griffin KIRO-TV-Panama-F8-JPEGtraveled with the Zylight F8 LED Fresnel light. At 9 lbs., the F8 collapses to less than four inches thick for easy transport and storage — especially for international trips.

“Traveling 4,000 miles hauling gear can be both cumbersome and expensive,” Griffin said in a statement. “A 9 lbs. light in my suitcase versus 20 lbs. light in an additional checked bag saved excess baggage to keep track of, or lose, plus weight and fees.”

Another advantage of the light was power. Most HMI lights are AC-only, and when you’re shooting in the Panama Canal, there aren’t too many power outlets.

“There was zero AC power available to us on the massive canal construction zone for our interview,” Griffin said. “Using my 90-watt Anton/Bauer camera battery to power the F8 at 100 percent gave me an hour and six minutes of beautiful 5600K light. Having to only take one battery type charger for both light and camera was a huge bonus.”

FOR-A’s FT-ONE 4K Camera Used to Capture Red Bull Productions

Below is an article published by Sports Video Group about FOR-A’s FT-ONE 4K variable frame rate camera being used for recent Red Bull Productions:

ForAFOR-A Corporation of America announces that its FT-ONE full 4K variable frame rate camera has been used to capture high-quality footage of sports action in super slow motion for several Red Bull Media House productions this year, including last summer’s Red Bull Wake Open in Tampa, Florida.

The Red Bull Wake Open features the best wakeboarding competitors from around the world. The competition showcased wakeboarding athletes performing in three different disciplines  – Boat, Big Air and Park – and took place on July 4th through July 6th at the Tampa Convention Center and SunWest. FOR-A’s FT-ONE was used in conjunction with the Evertz Red Bull Wake Open-2Dreamcatcher replay system to catch footage of the competition in 4K super slow motion. The camera system was positioned near one of the start/finish positions, and footage captured by the FT-ONE was broadcasted on NBC.

The FT-ONE was also used this past March in Quebec, Canada, for Red Bull Crashed Ice, an ice cross downhill world championship. Quebec City marked the final competition    – where the track is known to be the toughest, longest, fastest one in the entire series – and the FT-ONE was there to capture all of the intense action.

“The FT-ONE seamlessly fits into our live productions,” said Sumesh Thakur, of OceanWatch Production Group, Red Bull’s production house. “Unlike other 4K cameras, which are designed more for ENG or film, the FT-ONE is an ideal ‘live show’ camera. We’ve been very impressed with the FT-ONE/Dreamcatcher system, and recognize that it allows for tremendous creativity in live event production.”

The production team has been particularly impressed with the zoom and slow motion capabilities of the camera, which has allowed them to capture images in ways they’ve never been able to before. The Red Bull Crashed Ice event took place at night, so the OceanWatch operators capitalized on the FT-ONE’s dynamic range and low light capabilities to capture high quality imagery of the event’s action. The FT-ONE can record up to 900 frames per second, and employs FOR-A ‘s “FT1-CMOS” advanced CMOS color sensor.

“Working with Red Bull has been so exciting for us,” said Hiro Tanoue, FOR-A Corporation of America’s President. “The FT-ONE’s high speed and 4K capabilities are a perfect match for the adventurous sporting events that Red Bull hosts. Using the FT-ONE at these competitions has been an excellent opportunity to capture the thrills of sports at high resolution and slow motion camera speed never before seen.”
