Philippine Broadcaster GMA Network uses Vizrt’s Viz Virtual Studio & Social TV solution for Live Election coverage

GMA Network, one of the premier commercial broadcast television networks in the Philippines, led the ratings for its live Eleksyon 2013 coverage on its flagship TV channel GMA-7. As one of several GMA media outlets covering the country’s mid-term elections, GMA-7 together with its news channel GMA News TV, provided a total of 28 straight hours of live coverage beginning at 4:30am on election day, May 13th 2013.

GMA News and Public Affairs’ Eleksyon 2013 garnered the most TV viewers of any Philippine network, driven in part by its GMAElection 2 6 19 13innovative use of visually dynamic graphics technology from Vizrt. GMA acquired new Vizrt graphics technology, including a Viz Virtual Studio with camera tracking hardware and the Vizrt Social TV solution purchased expressly for Eleksyon 2013 coverage. These Vizrt graphics systems complement GMA’s existing Viz Trio character generator and Viz Ticker 3D system.

The Vizrt Social TV solutions gives broadcasters intuitive social media tracking, editorial, and production tools to help them manage their social media initiatives both on-air and online as well as incorporate user generated content into their traditional Vizrt graphics pipeline.

GMA built an immersive two-story 3D Viz Virtual Studio for Eleksyon 2013 that enabled GMA anchors to give their reports while walking around virtual objects such as 3D charts. The studio was filled with expansive video projections of live feeds from GMA news teams at 47 remote locations nationwide, video packages, and real-time data-driven graphics. There were also hologram effects, such as a dozen senatorial candidates appearing to stand alongside the anchor during live reports from the immersive 3D set.

The Vizrt Social TV solution grabbed and converted social media content from two custom GMA web applications for use in live TV graphics including Kandidato Buzz Index, which sifted through Twitter and Facebook posts to determine how senatorial candidates were trending in the social sphere. The other web application, GMA News Online’s Voting Experience Poll, displayed GMAElection 6 19 13the results of polls asking people about their voting experience. These web applications were powered by Mass Relevance, a social engagement platform that aggregates, captures, filters, and analyzes real-time social media content.

“Our goal was to take our live elections coverage to a whole new level,” said Felipe L. Gozon, GMA Network Chairman and CEO based at the company’s Quezon City, Philippines headquarters. “This investment in Vizrt graphics presentation technology enabled us to incorporate social media buzz about the candidates, colorful insight into the voting process, and comments about key issues into dynamic live graphics to give viewers a richer understanding and perspective of the day’s election results.”

“We’re extremely pleased that GMA’s Eleksyon 2013 coverage was both a technical and ratings success,” said Petter Ole Jakobsen, Vizrt’s CTO. “Integrating real-time social media and user-generated content into live broadcast graphics has become a valuable tool for providing in-depth reporting of any live broadcast news event, such as the recent Philippine elections.”

Jones Mobile Installs 10 New FUJINON Lenses on Vision HD Mobile Unit

Wayne, N.J., June 13, 2013 – FUJIFILM North America Corporation, Optical Devices Division is announcing that Jones Mobile Television—a video production company based in North Little Rock—installed 10 new FUJINON HDTV lenses on VisionHD, its 51-foot expanding mobile unit that was recently upgraded to HD.

The HD lens package—to be used with new Sony HDC-2400 3G multi-format HD camera systems—includes: four FUJINON Jones Mobile TV VisionHD Hard Camera with operator JPGXA88x8.8BESM and two FUJINON XA77x9.5BESM HDTV big box lenses, three HA23x7.6BERM and one HA14x4.5BERM Premier Series HD ENG field lenses.

“The video truck business is extremely demanding,” said Bob Derryberry, president of Jones Mobile Television, founded in 1993. “Our network clients have high expectations. With so much riding on major sports, entertainment, and corporate events, it’s critical to have video acquisition gear that offers superior HD picture quality and dependable performance,”

As part of an extensive $3 million upgrade, VisionHD’s interior was gutted and rebuilt as a multi-format HD truck. The truck’s onboard systems now include: a Grass Valley Kayenne switcher, Chyron Duet Hyper X3 live graphics system, Miranda and Matrox multi-viewer flat screen monitor walls, PESA Cheetah router, and multiple EVS systems for slow motion, editing, and multi-channel playback.

The truck previously carried FUJINON SD lenses that had been in service for about 13 years. According to Derryberry, “The lenses were still in very good working order when we sold them to another company for use in their studio. That speaks volumes about FUJINON lenses. Even after using them in extreme weather conditions, if you maintain them properly, they will last you many years.”

Jones Mobile TV Vision HD Fujinon lens on Handheld Camera JPGDesigned for use at large venues and sporting events, the XA88x8.8BESM is an HD telephoto “big box” field lens with an 88x zoom range. Designed for 2/3-inch cameras, the XA88x8.8BESM offers focal lengths of 8.8-777mm at 1X and 17.6-1554mm with the 2X extender.

The XA77x9.5BESM telephoto field lens, which is also a 2/3-inch big box HD lens, offers focal lengths of 9.5-732mm at 1X, and 19.0-1464mm with the 2X extender. Both DigiPower big box style lenses feature FUJINON’s exclusive aspheric technology, anti-fogging and optical stabilization, as well as EBC coating to reduce ghosting and flare and increase light transmission. The Premier Series HD ENG style lenses both offer 2X extenders and DigiPower servo technology.

“These ENG lenses complement the big box lenses perfectly,” Derryberry said. “The picture quality they produce is fantastic, and you can’t tell the difference when you’re intercutting shots from the big box and ENG lenses together.

“In my more than 30 years in broadcast television, I’ve come to know and trust FUJINON lenses, and I value the exceptional service and support I’ve received from our sales rep Dave Waddell and his colleagues over the years,” said Derryberry. “Because we can count on FUJINON, our clients can count on us.”

INTERNATIONAL DATACASTING CORPORATION ANNOUNCES FIRST QUARTER FISCAL 2014 RESULTS

Ottawa, ON – June 12, 2013 – International Datacasting Corporation (“IDC”) (TSX:IDC), a global leader in digital content distribution solutions for the world’s premiere broadcasters, announced its financial results today for the first quarter ended April 30, 2013.  All amounts in this release are in Canadian dollars unless otherwise stated.

Financial Highlights for the First Quarter:

(in thousands, except for gross margin (GM) and loss per share)

image014

Total revenues for the first quarter of Fiscal 2014 were $5.4 million, a decrease of 45% or $4.3 million from the comparable prior period as a result of the completion of the first phase of the Direct-to-Home (DTH) Broadcasting project in Kenya with the Wananchi Group. Product revenues grew by 31% during the first quarter resulting in an improvement in gross margin to 50% vs 28% in Q1 FY’13..   The margin improvement was largely due to a change in business mix, driven by increased Products revenue at higher margins.

Operating Expenses were $2.8 million, a decrease from $2.9 million in the first quarter of the prior year. When excluding $0.2 million of restructuring charges included in the first quarter of prior year, operating expenses increased by 4% during the first quarter of Fiscal 2014. This was due mainly to the new product launch of theSTAR Pro AudioTM Solution and LASERTM Targeted Ad Insertion Platform at the National Association of Broadcasters Show in April 2013, and due to fees associated with the recruitment of the new CEO and VP of Research and Development.

IDC earned a lower Adjusted EBITDA of $64 thousand during the current quarter due to higher operating expenses, compared to $159 thousand in the comparable prior period. IDC’s consolidated balance sheet improved during the current quarter, with working capital ratio of 3.4 to 1 and liquid assets of $7.2 million at April 30, 2013.

“IDC is actively changing its business model to focus on selling higher-margin products which contribute significantly to our customer’s business growth, and reducing our emphasis on one-time projects.” said Doug Lowther, President and CEO of IDC.   “This is a significant change and will take time to fully implement, however in the future we believe that this strategy will allow us to scale the business more effectively. We continue to see significant market interest in our STAR Pro AudioTM Solution, LASERTM Targeted Ad Insertion Platform, and Digital TattooTM DTH Over IP Gateway for multi-dwelling units.”

For further information on IDC’s first quarter results, refer to the unaudited interim condensed consolidated financial statements and Management’s Discussion and Analysis that will be available on SEDAR (www.sedar.com) after the Toronto Stock Exchange closes on June 12, 2013.

Advanced Systems Group, Quantum Host Free Webinar to Explore Archiving and Storage Strategies

image003EMERYVILLE, CALIF. –Advanced Systems Group (ASG), a leading West Coast video and film integration firm, and Quantum, a global leader in data management and protection solutions, will host a free webinar on archiving and tiered storage on Wednesday, June 26, at 10 a.m. PT.

Designed for smaller workgroups that are considering an archive system, the webinar will explain the benefits of a dedicated archive system and outline a number of applicable strategies and technologies. The presentation will also highlight the new Quantum StorNext AEL500 Mini Archive, an entry-level archive that starts with 30TB of LTO-6 tape capacity and can grow to more than 1PB.

Dave Van Hoy, president of ASG, and Yannick Guillerm, technical advisor for the Quantum StorNext AEL Archives product line, will host the webinar. “Everyone needs archiving, and Quantum’s new StorNext AEL500 Mini lowers the entry point,” explained Van Hoy. “Our webinar will help attendees identify best practices for smaller workgroup workflows.”

IDC to Showcase New Products for Video Distribution at CommunicAsia 2013

New LASERTM Targeted Ad Insertion Platform helps Asian broadcasters

increase ad revenues and reduce costs.

image003-3Ottawa, ON, June 12, 2013 – International Datacasting (TSX: IDC) will introduce the latest generation of its LASER Targeted Ad Insertion Platform to the Asian market at CommunicAsia2013 in Singapore, running from June 18-21. IDC will be exhibiting at Stand 1D2-04.

IDC’s LASER Targeted Ad Insertion Platform, Digital Tattoo™ DTH Over IP Gateway, and SuperFlex® Pro Cinema Cache Servers and Event Players are among the highlights of the company’s CommunicAsia booth. These products give Asian broadcasters and service providers new ways to increase revenue streams while reducing operating costs.

The LASER platform provides targeted local ad insertion and DVB-S/S2 satellite video reception in a single edge device. Globally, broadcasters and service providers lose millions of dollars in ad revenues every year because of licensing, regulatory and copyright issues specific to certain regions throughout the world. With the LASER platform, operators can provide regionalized ad insertion and blackout management for satellite delivered content – from one cost-effective platform.  The solution’s blackout capabilities ensure the broadcaster can safely sell and distribute any network-wide ad, even if it is not permitted or suitable for the entire distribution footprint.

“Our LASER platform provides a video distribution receiver, an ad splicer, and an ad server all in one affordable device,” said Doug Lowther, president and CEO at IDC. “And with it, television networks and content redistributors can offer a more powerful advertising solution. It affords greater flexibility to advertisers by offering both dynamic ad targeting and flexible ad footprints. We believe this next generation product will enable many Asian broadcasters to increase their advertising revenues.”

IDC’s Digital Tattoo™ DTH Over IP Gateway enables direct-to-home (DTH) satellite operators to expand the addressable market for their existing services by gaining access to residential customers living in multi-dwelling units (MDUs). Digital Tattoo helps overcome the distribution challenges currently faced by DTH operators looking to provide services to potential subscribers within MDUs including apartment buildings, gated communities, college campuses, and healthcare facilities.

IDC’s Digital Tattoo DTH Over IP Gateway uses IP networking to distribute DTH content to  MDU subscribers over a standard Ethernet network. IDC’s approach is easier and more cost-effective to implement because it allows the Ethernet infrastructure to be reused. This enables MDU owners to offer residents additional services, such as Internet connectivity, voice over IP, and surveillance camera monitoring.

IDC’s popular digital cinema products will also be highlighted at CommunicAsia including the  SuperFlex Pro Cinema Cache Servers and Event Players. Over 70 percent of satellite-connected digital cinemas throughout the world use IDC’s Digital Cinema Solutions.
