World’s Broadcasters Cover Elections with Vizrt Live Video and Graphics Tools

On November 6th when results from the United States Presidential election race come pouring in, nearly 90 percent of the world will be watching live video and graphic tabulations produced with Vizrt equipment as Vizrt continues to be the company the world is truly watching. Thousands of Viz Engines will be working overtime for this event, performing real-time video and graphic composites and rendering 2D and 3D animations in SD and HD.

In the United States alone, six national networks and more than 150 local channels will cover this election with Vizrt tools. Approximately 1,000 Viz Engine renderers will drive election results for U.S. broadcasters.

“With our installed base clearly the majority around the world, Vizrt customers will again produce graphics that  most of the world will watch on November 6th,” said Petter Ole Jakobsen, CTO of Vizrt. “We’re proud of what our customers are creating with our technology and of the added excitement our tools enable on such mission-critical, high-profile, live events.”

The way in which the equipment will be used for election coverage has expanded along with the number of installations. More U.S. broadcasters will use Viz Engine within the studio than ever before. Interactive screens, video walls, virtual studios and immersive graphics will be powered through both Viz Engines and Viz Media Engine server-based media asset management systems. Viz Anchor, an iPad control application, will be used with greater frequency by news anchors to manipulate video clips and graphics running on Viz Virtual Studio and Viz Video Wall.  With Viz Virtual Studio, existing sets can be enhanced with immersive graphics, with which the anchor can interact.

The all important results map that breaks down voting results by US county and state is created with Viz World. Used by over 1500 broadcasters worldwide, Viz World has become the defacto standard in broadcast mapping. With live data feeds, the maps are updated in real-time on air, in touchscreens, virtual sets, and fullscreen.

Playlists are created and managed in Viz Content Pilot, a template-based graphics and video file management system which gives complete control of all graphic and video content from within the newsroom control system. Graphics can be edited via a plug-in for the Viz Trio CG software that enables all major non-linear editing systems to access Trio templates to change text, images, 3D objects and clips. And live election data will be continuously displayed with Viz Ticker3D. In the Control room, Viz Trio will display live graphics and video with content constantly being updated live from various data sources. Many broadcasters will be using Viz Trio operators in the control room but in the U.S. many of the local stations will be driving Vizrt graphics through control room automation systems.

The number of broadcasters throughout the world using multi-platform delivery has also increased as Viz Media Engine plays a larger role in controlling video and its distribution to different devices. With a single step Vizrt takes videos from a MAM to the web and mobile platforms faster than real-time. Combine this with device adapted graphics and a viewer can watch the coverage on television, online or through a mobile device with the highest possible quality.

Vizrt’s hands-on support of its customers is apparent this election season, with over 20 Vizrt staffers providing on-site and creative services, data integration instruction, final set up of election show related devices, and equipment rental management to its U.S. broadcast clientele.

MediaPro IQ users can easily edit, clip, and publish live or recorded content in real-time. By intelligently using cable card technology, MediaPro IQ records encrypted cable feeds in full HD. The solution is compatible with a variety of web browsers, and has the ability to interface with iPad, iPhone and Android. Video can be exported to Flash, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, H.264, and XDCAM and other formats for content repurposing.

Red Bull Uses Vizrt for Live Graphics as Felix Baumgartner Breaks Sound Barrier

The edge of space was where Felix Baumgartner stood Sunday, October 14 2012. At 39km or 128,100ft, already setting a world record for highest manned balloon flight, Baumgartner leaned forward and rapidly disappeared from camera view.

9 minutes later Felix Baumgartner was on the New Mexico desert ground, fists in the air in triumph. His decent set additional world records for becoming the first skydiver to break the speed of sound, reaching a maximum velocity of 1,342km/h (833.9mph), and the record for highest ever freefall.

The entire event was broadcast live on youtube.com where another record was broken for simultaneous views. More than 8 million viewers watched the descent through youtube’s streaming service. The event was broadcasted by 77 stations across 48 countries around the world.

All the graphic content for TV and for live stream was provided by Vizrt Technology. The joint team of Vizrt and netventure personnel, represented on site by Yan Heydlauf of Vizrt South West Europe and Stefan Meyer of netventure Germany, gathered live data from capsule telemetry, mission clocks, chest pack information, bio-meds and other mission information in Red Bull Stratos Mission Control in Roswell, New Mexico. All data for several websites were fed by web services provided by netventure using data centers in Germany, Austria, Ireland and the US.

The team used Viz Graphic Hub’s shared memory to distribute content simultaneously
between New Mexico and the Red Bull Stratos studio at Servus TV in Salzburg, Austria. A Viz|Trio operator simply called up “pages” in a Viz|Trio show while the content was constantly being updated live using scripting and Viz Graphics Hub shared memory maps. Three Viz Engines, Vizrt’s real-time 3D compositing engine, were used to display the on-air graphics and video compositing. At Servus TV, netventure film Austria, which has been in charge of live graphics services for two years, used the same Viz|Trio show to broadcast this successful event. The several Viz|Trio systems were used to display on air graphics and all the studio monitors.

“Red Bull has been an exciting partner for us to work with over the last few years. From the Red Bull X-Fighters to this amazing jump, they are constantly pushing the limit and bringing us fun new challenges.” said Petter Ole Jakobsen, CTO Vizrt. “We congratulate Felix for this landmark accomplishment.”

University of Idaho Uses Six Hitachi Cameras to Produce HD Video for Idaho Vandals’ Football Webcasts and Large-Screen Display

WOODBURY, NEW YORK – Hitachi Kokusai Electric America, Ltd., today announced that the Video Production Center (VPC) at the University of Idaho, in Moscow, Idaho, uses six Hitachi Z-HD5000 HDTV studio/field production cameras to produce high-definition video during Idaho Vandals football games.

At  the ASUI-Kibbie Dome, the University of Idaho’s 16,000-seat covered football field where the Division 1 Western Athletic Conference team plays, the VPC produces game-day entertainment  including   highlights and replays that display on the stadium’s  20×10 foot Daktronics display, as well as the Dome’s HD Cable TV system, and the VandalXtra live game webcast.

As U-Idaho’s in-house video production service, the VPC also produces and webcasts HD video of convocations and commencements held at Kibbie, as well as the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival, a prestigious, annual jazz music event that draws thousands of visitors to the University.

“While we bought these new Hitachi HD cameras to replace aging SD cameras, they’ve taken our video production to a whole new level,” said Dave Tong, manager/producer for the Video Production Center, which is part of the Creative Services unit of U-Idaho’s Communications and Marketing department.  “These cameras give us great picture quality, dependable performance, and useful, convenient features—like the ability to store operator settings for faster easier setup at future events.”

Equipped with Fujinon XA20sX8.5 HD lenses, the six Hitachi Z-HD5000 cameras are workhorses that are constantly on the go. They are part of a fly pack that includes a NewTek TriCaster 855 integrated production switcher, NewTek 3Play 820 HD replay system, and Sony HVR1500A HDV/DVCAM VTR, along with six Hitachi CU-HD500 camera control units and six Hitachi RU-1000VR remote control units.

The gear is packed into four road cases and transported by van wherever events are taking place on campus, including the Kibbie Dome,  the University Auditorium, the Idaho Commons as well as the VPC’s own  studio within the Student Union Building (SUB).

The purchase of the cameras coincided with the University’s 2011 renovation of the Kibbie Dome—which included new skyboxes, safety improvements, and fiber cabling runs—that was financed by state funding as well as private donations.  VPC took that opportunity to obtain its own financing to upgrade the Kibbie Dome’s video production control room, including broadcast quality HD cameras that could maximize the fiber cabling and the new HD TV system in the suites, club deck, and press box areas, including the official’s replay review system.

“We chose the Hitachi Z-HD5000’s because their three 2/3-inch CCDs produce superior native 1080i HD imaging and the fiber adapters take full advantage of the stadium’s fiber cabling,” Tong explained.  “The CCU’s integrate all the operational features we were looking for at an economical price.”  The CU-HD500 CCU provides many features including two tally lights, two return video sends, power, two intercom channels, and a dedicated teleprompter channel per camera.

“Before we started using these Hitachi cameras, we were spending a lot of time resolving technical issues or searching for spare parts,” Tong continued. “They’ve proven to be high-quality yet cost-effective camera systems in every regard.”

The Hitachi cameras capture every aspect of Idaho Vandals football, including game action, crowd shots, fan appreciation activities, and the team’s entrance from the tunnel onto the field. The TriCaster ISO-records camera signals and the program on its hard drives, webcasts live shows, outputs video for big-screen display, and outputs video to the Sony HDV VTR.

U-Idaho webcasting also gives a global audience the chance to appreciate cultural and arts events taking place at the University, such as the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival, a premiere jazz music event now in its 44th year.  Student performances at the Young Artist Concerts can be seen live or on demand at theUniversity’s website, or purchased as commemorative DVDs.  The Hitachi cameras also provide the IMAG for the concerts inside the Kibbie Dome during the festival, which features world-class jazz musicians.

The Hitachi package was purchased through Hitachi dealer VMI, Inc., in Spokane, WA.
