ABS Media Technology Expo Provides Forum for Pacific Northwest Video Professionals

SEATAC, WA — Professional video and audio systems integration firm Advanced Broadcast Solutions (ABS) today announced Media Technology Expo, which runs Sept. 26-27 at Leftbank Annex in Portland, Ore. Scandinavian Public Broadcasters Use Responsive Web Design to Create Dynamic, Device-Aware Mobile User Experiences

Vizrt Ltd announced today that two Scandinavian public broadcasters—SVT/Sweden and Yle/Finland—have launched new online and mobile services that leverage responsive web design. The Scandinavian broadcast powerhouses use Vizrt software for their digital media production workflow, with the design featured in their online and mobile device services based upon their own in-house research and development.

In responsive web design, the on-screen content is optimized for the resolution and size of displays on devices like smart phones, tablet computers, and laptops. The web page—including text, video, graphics, apps, and even navigational elements—contains logic that prompts each device to automatically adapt the presentation layout according to its own unique display characteristics.

This fluid end-user experience goes even further with lazy-loading, which enables easier navigation.  For example, click-for-more links cause the new text to open right there rather than in a separate pop-up window.

The Vizrt Online Suite, a content management system (CMS) used by SVT and Yle, encompasses the Escenic Content Studio for fast creation of media-rich websites, as well as the Escenic Content Engine, which stores and delivers content and offers an API that developers can extend to implement responsive web designs.

The Vizrt Online Suite also includes a powerful tool called the Widget Framework, which provides users with ready-made building blocks (widgets) that simplify website creation. Widgets are mini-templates that contain code to swiftly create specific elements of the web page, such as articles, menus, ads, polls, and other features. Content dropped into a particular area of the layout assigned to a widget automatically assumes the functionality of that widget, which speeds up advanced website development even by non-technical staff.

IBC2012 Marks European Debut of Digital Nirvana’s Updated Broadcast Suite

Updated Monitor IQ™ Broadcast Monitoring System, MediaPro IQ™ Content Repurposing System and ManyView IQ™ Among Highlights

Newark, CA – At IBC2012, the latest version of Digital Nirvana’s flagship broadcast monitoring software, Monitor IQ, and two products first introduced at the NAB 2012 show in April will make their European debut. The two new products being shown for the first time in Europe are MediaPro IQ for repurposing content for multi-platform distribution and ManyView IQ, an enterprise-wide system for video distribution over IP. Broadcasters can see demonstrations at the Digital Nirvana stand (Hall 10, Booth A12), from September 7-11th at the RAI Exhibition and Congress Centre in Amsterdam.

“After the enthusiastic reception we received to our new features and products in April at the NAB convention and the Broadcast Asia show last month, we’re excited to bring our latest innovations to IBC,” said Ned Chini, vice president of sales and marketing, Digital Nirvana. “Our products are unique in the market and offer capabilities and cost savings that competitive solutions simply do not.”

Monitor IQ, for example, is the only broadcast monitoring system that provides centralized management, automatic ad detection, a
director’s audio track, as well as an advanced metadata harvester™.  The system also offers an efficient broadcast monitoring architecture that reduces operation costs and lowers the total cost of ownership.

Because the platform is based on open web services (REST) API’s, Digital Nirvana’s software can be easily integrated with third party products and can scale from one to multiple servers and from one to hundreds of channels. All Digital Nirvana solutions are web enabled, so users can access the software through any standard web browser without ActiveX component.

One of the key Monitor IQ features that will be demonstrated at IBC is its powerful loudness monitoring and audio logging capability, including OEM software licensed from Minnetonka Audio Software, Inc. Loudness monitoring is bundled as a standard feature within Monitor IQ essentials, plus and premium versions. Minnetonka Audio’s AudioTools Loudness Measurement module enables Monitor IQ users to measure audio levels, perform quality control monitoring, record and log broadcast signals.

There are several international standards for loudness that require strict monitoring and compliance. These include: the international ITU BS.1770 standards; ATSC A/85; EBU R 128; AGCOM (Italy); and others. Monitor IQ incorporates Minnetonka Audio’s proprietary software within a broader feature set for loudness monitoring and logging of virtually all audio standards. With Monitor IQ being a 64-bit Linux-based system, and because Minnetonka Audio can upgrade its software to comply with any changes to loudness or other audio quality control standards, both products are relatively future-proof.

Another new feature within the Monitor IQ Premier package is the Advanced Metadata HarvesterTM functionality which provides the ability to track any data the system logs and collects from alarms or from the broadcast feed. It can locate where the error occurred in the broadcast signal, collect forensic analysis about the event, and report that data back to the customer. It provides access to the data and to the mapping point of when, where and how that video was recorded.  This new feature dynamically enhances broadcast discrepancy reporting by allowing station executives and engineers to hyperlink straight to the reported video and view a problem or issue.

Monitor IQ

Monitor IQ is a monitoring, logging, compliance, and content republishing system for TV networks and stations. It combines the functionality of content recording (HD and SD in full resolution), content searching, retrieve and repurposing, Web publishing, signal monitoring, air-check logging, archiving, ad verification and tracking, and competitive analysis in a scalable networked appliance.

Several new features of MonitorIQ were recently unveiled, and the system has been divided into four packages so a wide range of broadcasters can take advantage of the company’s technology.

Monitor IQ Starter

This entry-level package offers all the logging functionality necessary for a one- to two-channel system and includes 90 days of low-resolution storage.Searching is based upon keywords, titles, subtitles, descriptions, textual metadata, closed-caption text and imported logs, with filtering by time, date and channel. Recordings can be easily edited, clipped, stored and sent via email or FTP.

Monitor IQ Essentials

Monitor IQ Essentials is a logging and monitoring system that includes all the functionality necessary for broadcasters to ensure regulatory compliance. New features being shown at IBC include support for IP as an input source, and loudness monitoring is now bundled in as a standard feature within the package.

The Monitor IQ Essentials system accepts DVB-T/C/S2, ASI, ASI/IP, HD/SD-SDI, ATSC/QAM and NTSC/QAM, and NTSC/PAL formats. It records audio, video, VANC metadata and captioning in both high- and low-definition. As with the Starter package, searching is based upon keywords, titles, subtitles, descriptions, textual metadata, closed-caption text and imported logs, with filtering by time, date and channel. And recordings can also be edited, clipped, stored and sent via email or FTP.

Monitor IQ Plus

Monitor IQ Plus includes all of the features found within Essentials and adds several new enhancements. New features being shown at IBC are the ability to connect and control Monitor IQ via an iPad, iPhone, or Android interface. This mobile feature makes it easy for field sales reps to show clients their ad content in the context of the broadcast programming.  Other new features include centralized management and a web services (REST) API.

Monitor IQ Premier

The Premier package extends beyond the capabilities found in the other packages with innovative, new features, such as: ad detection, directors audio track; integration with third party routers and multi-viewers, and advanced metadata harvesting.

MediaPro IQ

The new MediaPro IQ solution is a content repurposing system for multi-platform distribution.  It records video feeds in full HD and offers a quick, low-cost way to repurpose HD clips from broadcast.  This new solution is designed for news and sports directors who frequently need to repurpose content.

MediaPro IQ allows users to easily edit, clip and publish live or recorded content in real-time.  Search is based on keywords, program titles, descriptions, textual metadata, closed-caption, as-run logs, traffic logs, alarm and discrepancy logs and time/date or channel filters. 

MediaPro IQ is compatible with such web browsers as: FireFox, Safari, Internet Explorer, and Chrome. iPad, iPhone, and Android interface are also available. Video can be exported to Flash, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, H.264, and XDCAM and other formats for content repurposing.

ManyView IQ

With the new ManyView IQ system, it’s now easy and cost-effective to deploy a private, enterprise-wide IPTV system for use by producers and staff who need to view real-time video signals at their desktop. The system eliminates the need for costly coaxial cabling, IP encapsulators, and IP output encoders. IP multicast delivers real-time video feeds to desktop and set-top boxes throughout an organization. ManyView IQ is DNLA-enabled, which provides VOD-like ability to store, distribute and publish offline video assets throughout the enterprise for any device on the network, such as: desktops, mobile devices (iPad, iPhone, Android, smart phones), set-top boxes, connected TVs, and media players.

ManyView IQ is compatible with current standards-compliant web browsers, enabling an on-the-go workflow through a web browser. It also has iPad, iPhone, and Android interfaces available.

FUJIFILM Optical Devices Division to Exhibit at Three Upcoming South American Trade Shows

Tecnotelevision 2012, Broadcast & Cable 2012, and CAPER 2012 Trade Shows Offer Significant Opportunities to Connect with Latin American Customers

Masafumi (Masa) Nakano Named Vice President of JVC Security Division

Sky News Expands Vizrt’s Role in Creation of Live, Data-Driven Graphics for Daily Business News Updates

To ensure that viewers have the most current business news, Sky News has expanded its use of Vizrt’s Viz Content Pilot to create real-time, data-driven graphics for its “Business Bulletins,” presented at regular intervals throughout the 24-hour news day.

While Sky News has been using Viz Content Pilot template-based graphics and video management system and the Viz Artist design workstation to create full-frame graphics and 3D animations for some time, in May 2012 the network began using Content Pilot and Artist to embellish its Business Bulletins with full-screen graphics, side panels (for HD viewers), lower third supers and scrolling tickers that contain financial data updated in real-time.

“The design focus at Sky News is to provide our viewers with a wealth of timely information in an attractive, structured and understandable format,” said Brent Jones, head of 3D/VFX for Sky News in Isleworth, Middlesex, UK.  Considered one of the world’s premiere breaking news networks, Sky News delivers international news to roughly 103 million homes in 115 countries worldwide.

Using a system’s program output and dual PowerAux outputs, three “programs” of different content can be generated using a 1 M/E Granite or Mica system, and each can have up to six key layers on top. It is ideal for driving any combination of image magnification (I-MAG) screens, Internet feeds, and live television productions, because the multi-screen technology maintains one frame of constant delay across all outputs for continual lip sync throughout the presentation.

Multi-Lingual Fluent-View is a local language user interface that provides support for English, Chinese, Portuguese, Spanish, and other languages, and enables users to easily add languages. All production controls are displayed in the selected language, including the entire Fluent-View “top page” layout, menus, messages, file names, source names, and Fluent™ Macro names. Plus, Broadcast Pix Translation Assistant software allows users to add other languages or dialects. V3.1 also provides Unicode support, enabling file names and other data to be viewed in character-based languages like Chinese.

Also new with V3.1 is optional remote control of and recording to Grass Valley K2 Solo and Summit video servers, as well as enhanced control of video servers from  360 Systems, Harris, and Omneon. The new option enables Broadcast Pix systems to control up to four channels of playback. It supports auto-start of clips when brought to air and integration with Fluent Macros. Plus, clip names are displayed on the panel’s PixPad. Remote control of up to 12 AJA Ki Pro recorders is included on all Granite and Mica systems.
